The Hebrews

African-American, Negro or Hebrew?

There are many ways to ‘identify’ a person. It can come through social security numbers, DNA results, fingerprints or retina scans. Identity, or who you are, is tied to almost every human activity in the natural realm. It also plays a major role in the spiritual realm.

If you ask most ‘black people’ living in the United States today to identify their ethnicity, they will usually respond by saying they are African-American. But when examined linguistically, this label doesn’t make sense. When you break it down, the label can be parsed this way: place or country of origin/ethnicity-citizen. So, Italian-American would refer to someone who was born in Italy but later became an American citizen. If you were born in America, you are (from a legal standpoint) an American, even if your ancestors were brought here as a slave. (Do ‘white’ South Africans refer to themselves as South African-Americans or are they just considered ‘white’?) Consider this: not all Africans are Negroes, and  not all Negroes are from Africa. Some are from the Caribbean. It gets confusing, doesn’t it?

But what if none of those labels apply? What if you are someone else entirely? What if you are the people Scripture refers to as descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by bloodline? Would that change how you see yourself and how you live your life?
